Seward SkillsUSA has opportunity to serve community

SkillsUSA members from across the nation gathered on June 26 to participate in a day of community service.

SkillsUSA partnered with Timberland Pro, Subway, Habitat for Humanity Kansas City, and other partners in order to put this community service project together.

This project has grown so large over the past five years that all the members of the Seward team had to apply to even have a chance to participate in the project.

SCCC/ATS SkillsUSA members were fortunate to receive seven of the 12 invitations given to students from the state of Kansas.

SkillsUSA team wins 12th in nation

SkillsUSA members from Seward County Community College/Area Technical School won the right to travel to Kansas City in June to compete in the SkillsUSA National Championships.

As the president of this group, I knew it was a special honor. In april we had won the Gold Medal at state level in Wichita to win the right to compete at nationals.

The opening and closing team began training for this contest in October of last year. We practiced the proper way to open a meeting, conduct business, and properly close a meeting.

This sounds easy, but is truly a lot of work. All of the members of the team have to be in unison with all actions and the entire meeting has to flow according to a set standard.

Four more fundraisers for Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa will host four fundraisers for the remainder of the year: a Krispy Kreme fundraiser, quiz bowl, graduation bouquets, and honors breakfast.

For the Krispy Kreme fundraiser, members will take orders for donuts; Phi Theta Kappa adviser Debbie Stafford said that the funds raised will go to three different causes, the American Cancer Society, the local organization

Southwest Miracles, and to help a young woman who has cancer. Contact any Phi Theta Kappa member or call Stafford at 417-1106 to place an order. Orders will have to be in by April 20 and will come in April 26.

TRiO travels to Santa Fe

The students of Seward’s TRiO program embarked on a memorable trip to Santa Fe, N.M., last Thursday. The group stayed at the Hilton Plaza, located in cultural downtown New Mexico. Students visited the chapel of St. Francis, as well as the Loretto chapel.

The Loretto chapel has been featured on the television show, “Unsolved Mysteries,” for the story of its unique spiral staircase. The winding staircase makes two complete 360 degree spirals, has no visual means of support, and was constructed within three months time.

Students also took in the Georgia O’ Keeffe art museum which featured many of O’ Keeffe’s famous landscapes and flower paintings, along with many of the works of Susan Rothenberg.

Clubs pledge to raise money at phonathon

A Phonathon to raise money for scholarships will be April 7 to 11.

“Our goal is to raise $20,000 for scholarships, and we want to get many clubs and organizations to help,” Dean of Student Services Celeste Donovan said.

Clubs and teams who have already signed up include SIFE, ADN, Sigma Chi Chi, choir, Kappa Beta Delta, Phi Theta Kappa, ISO volunteers, Crusader, SGA, Sports Medicine, HALO, tennis, mens and womens basketball, womens softball, volleyball and baseball.

The Phonathon will be during the evenings of April 7 and 8 and all day on April 10. Prizes for students are a 32-inch TV for the person who raises the most, a $150 Wal-Mart gift card for the person with the largest single pledge, an eight GB iPod Touch for the person...
