Students fall victim to ‘soccer fever’Soccer. Futbol. Joga Bonito. The beautiful game. It seems as though the entire world succumbed to the sickness known to many as “soccer fever” this summer, due to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup is an event that takes place every four years between countries whose soccer teams qualify to play. This year, Spain won the World Cup by defeating Holland in the finals. The World Cup is a symbol of unification and peace to many countries around the world. Many people believe that it unites the world unlike any other sporting event. The United States, which isn’t a very soccer oriented country, seemed extremely involved this year in supporting the national team. Even after the World Cup, the United States was in full-on... Orlando: more than humidity and DisneyLast year, I decided I wasn’t going to spend this summer sleeping until noon and working in a greasy diner. After doing some intense Googling, I finally came across a Journalism Internship with Wycliffe Bible Translators. I had no idea what that was, but I knew I wasn’t going to be doing any Bible translating. Originally, I had expected to be going on an overseas missions trip, but this internship was in Orlando, Fla., so I figured that was close enough.
After arriving in Orlando, we had a week long orientation to Wycliffe, the Summer Internship program and Orlando. I learned about the literacy and translation work that Wycliffe does, and about how the USA Headquarters, which is the Orlando offices, supports the overseas work. We... Be a hero by being a good role modelAs a kid, my favorite super heros were Batman, Zorro and, of course, my mom. I would always run around the house in the Dark Knight’s cape, and put on a hat and mask and run around fending off evil with the all mighty plunger.
Everyone has someone to look up to. Whether it’s someone who can fly at the rate of a speeding bullet, or someone that bakes chocolate cookies for them, our heroes have a very big influence on our outlook on life. The truth is, sometimes we do not realize who is looking up to us. Sometimes it may be a kid at church or a neighbor that watches us outside with our friends. Whoever it may be, our actions can affect someone else’s perspective even if we are unaware that they are watching. George Lucas, the... |
School is challenging, but don’t regret itFirst off, if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you’re a student. If you’re a student, you’ve probably successfully made it to the end of this school year.
Being that this is a community college, there’s a one in two chance that you’re graduating with your associate degree this May. For that, I congratulate you. It’s something I didn’t have in me to accomplish. In my college experience, I’ve found that one of the most difficult obstacles a person can hurdle is the first two years of college. In those first two years, most are unsure of what they’re going to be when they graduate. This makes it hard to find the motivation to achieve when you are unsure of what it is you’re trying to achieve. For... Success is in sight for weight loss goalAs far back as I can remember, I’ve always been the chubby kid. I was the one who went back to get seconds when they were available in the cafeteria in elementary school, and junk food was also my best friend. I got along with Cheetos, Fritos and Doritos. I never really cared about those extra pounds I?packed on when I was little because my parents always said, “you’ll get tall and even out.” Fast-forward to after 8th grade and I stayed at a sad 5-foot-6-inches, which was taller than both of my parents, yet still just average in real world standards.
I did start worrying about my extra pounds the summer after middle school and started eating more salads and exercising more. I was at an ideal 150 pounds that summer, and it felt... |
