The Seward County Community College Board of Trustees
moved forward on the merger between the college and Southwest
Kansas Technical School at its regular board meeting recently,
including a name change.
The board approved a name change to Seward County Community
College/Area Technical School effective July 1.
In addition, the administration has submitted an application
to North Central Association Higher Learning Council as required
for the merger between the two educational institutions.
In addition, Dr. Duane Dunn, SCCC president, reviewed the curriculum
planning and alignment of courses for the 12 technical school
programs. As stipulated in the consolidation agreement, all
current programs will continue in the same scope and sequence
for at least two years. However, due to low enrollment four
programs have been placed on probationary status.
Celeste Donovan, dean of student services, reported on new rates
for the technical school dorms. Summer contracts will be available
for students in programs which last beyond May 16, 2009, on
a daily occupancy rate.
The board accepted the low bid in the amount of $478,804 from
American Mechanical of Wichita to replace two original main
campus boilers and one original chiller and to replace the original
boiler at the Epworth Allied Health Education Center.
In other action, the board
extended contracts to faculty and professional staff;
salary increases will be determined at later date;
approved refinancing the Series 2001 Revenue Bonds at
a lower interest rate, saving approximately $45,000;
accepted the proposal from Byron Bird and Associates
of Liberal in the amount of $27,000 to perform the fiscal 2008
independent audit;
approved Dale Doll as the new division chair of the Humanities
and Social Sciences Division and Luke Dowell as the division
chair of the Natural Science and Mathematics Division beginning
in August 2008; and
accepted the resignation of Chrissy Davis, student success
specialist, and Kile Magner, surgical technology instructor.
The next board meeting is May 5 in the SCCC boardroom.
