Opening weekend for the Saints wasn’t bad as they came away with a 2-2 record.

Their first opponent was Galveston College on Feb 1-2, playing three games. The Saints won two and lost one.

The first game, on Feb. 1, Galveston beat the Saints with a late rally.

Tanner King, pitcher from Canyon, Texas, pitched five shutout innings. Hitting was a struggle for Seward, striking out 10 times. They only came away with two hits in the game from KP Werner, outfielder from Greeley, Colorado, and Benny Ayala, first base from Fort Worth, Texas. Ayala drove in two runs. Galveston came away with the first win of the three-game series with a score of 5-2.

The Saints grabbed the next two games on Feb. 2.  They beat Galveston easily in the first game, 6-3, but the second game needed a come-from-behind effort to get the win.

Needing two runs to win, the Saints went to work in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on first and second, Cayde Ward pinch hit and drove in the tying run with a line drive single to left field. After an intentional walk to load the bases, hit into a fielder’s choice.  The Whitecaps went for the double play, but Allen outran the throw as Armijo scored from third, winning the game for the Saints 5-4.

The Seward County baseball team ended their opening weekend with a 13-3 loss again Weatherford College on Feb. 3.

Seward will have their home opener on Saturday (Feb. 9) when they host Northeaster Junior College for a 1:00 p.m. double-header at Brent Gould Field.
