The Crusader has been the SCCC student voice since 1969. It publishes stories containing local news and features that highlight the diversity of campus. This website and its content is created 100 percent by Seward County Community College students, even the ideas are thought of by students.

Crusader staff decorate cookies as part of the 2020 fall semester final. This final is traditionally the last of the semester and a time to relax. Staff members reflect on stories from the last few months as part of the activity.

The 2018-19 staff won the Collegiate Media Association’s Pinacle Award for the best two-year website in the nation. It was also awarded the coveted “All Kansas” award for websites award by Kansas Collegiate Media. The competition was against all two-year and four-year colleges and universities in the state. The staff also came away with more than 30 awards.
Mission Statement:
The journalism department of SCCC strives to teach students to competently and fairly report news in the student newspaper and online newspaper forums, presenting quality products while learning life and career skills. The journalism department will present opportunities to learn skills in news writing, design and layout, advertising, and photography.

Crusader History:
The SCCC news team has won more than 40 awards for best of show, exceptional achievement and coveted “Pacemaker” awards. Past Crusader staff members have taken home many prestigious individual awards such as Jose Medrano who was awarded Gold Medal Kansas Journalist of the Year in 2013 and Tonya Loewen who was spotlighted as one of the top eight University Designers in the SDP-U national contest in 2012.
