College is a fun, new, and exciting experience, surrounded by what seems like a million new faces. Moving somewhere far from your friends and family and out of your “comfort zone” to a new environment without the daily interactions you have known all your life makes most people nervous.

Due to my two night classes and a 22 credit hour semester, I spend more time at the college than at home, especially in the evenings. I often find myself walking out to my car in a darkened parking lot alone. It almost sounds like a horror movie setup, and some nights it can feel that way.

Trick-or-Treat Street provides safe environment for campus visitors

Seward County Community College/Area Technical School will host Trick- or- Treat Street from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, to give campus clubs a chance to interact with the community.

Enactus club ‘legacy project’ created to empower women

The local Enactus group is working on a “legacy project,” using the name of E-closet for a area being renovated in the old dorms on campus. The project is, in part, to collect business attire for women interviewing for jobs.

Other events such as the Sweet Celebration Search, Fried Ice Cream Friday and the Jalepeño Eating Contest have taken place in recognition of Hispanic Heritage month. The Sweet Celebration Search will end Oct 14. The student who collects the most lollipop wrappers by this time will win cash. The Jalepeño eating contest winner was Dalibor Kohadarevic after eating a total of nine peppers. An upcoming event  is Fiesta Fun in the Student Living Center on Oct. 14. ilyAIMY, an acoustic grunge band, will perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Seward County Community College Showcase Theatre. A masters class will take place at 4 p.m. in the college band room.

Food Service director wins $5,000 at Liberal Duck Race

Remodeling planned to transform jet to STEM learning center

A Fed Ex jet donated to the Liberal Mid-America Air Museum Foundation is being reconstructed into a STEM classroom. STEM includes the education of science, technology, engineering and math for students from kindergarten, middle school, high school and college. The Fed Ex donation program has donated more than 60 jets for educational purposes, often to aviation maintenance technology programs.
