Basketball Preview Night tips off Oct. 23

Fans can get a glimpse of the 2012-13 men’s and women’s basketball teams and witness preseason shenanigans during the free Basketball Preview Night from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 23, in the Green House.

Seward winning record diminishing

It’s been a lose-win-lose-win-lose kind of week for the Lady Saints. Inconsistency is an evident factor coming from the team lately, as they haven’t been able to get back to their winning streak from the beginning of the season. In the beginning, the Lady Saints were ahead of the game and defeating their competition, but now their record is leveling out, now at 12-10, as they get further into their season.

Carolina Dias Gasparini has been one of the leading ladies for Seward volleyball in kills this season. She logged nine kills and 13 digs against one of Seward’s biggest rivals, the Hutchinson Blue Dragons, but there’s more to this athlete than can be seen on the court.

Saints optimistic for spring season

The Saints baseball team continued their fall scrimmages with games against Colorado Lightning and Clarendon College this past weekend. Galen McSpadden, head baseball coach, said, “I liked what I saw this weekend. As long as I can see progress, and that was on the mound, and that was defensively, and that was at the plate, so that’s encouraging.”

It’s safe to say that the Lady Saints volleyball team has been displaying superlative teamwork in every set they play. The team had their first home game against the Dodge City Community College Conquistadors, and took the match in a sweep of three sets.

Kowalchuk checks in as coach for Razorbacks

Christian Kowalchuk has a few baseball firsts. Two are the first and only Saskatchewan baseball player to play in a NCAA Division 1 baseball College World Series(2009), and also, first and only Canadian to date to coach baseball for the Arkansas Razorbacks of the Southeastern Conference, one of the premier conferences in all the nation. Kowalchuk is currently a full time assistant at the University of Arkansas.

Thais Baziquetto-Allen is the new assistant volleyball coach for the Lady Saints. She is from Guarulhos, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her being from Brazil is very convenient since there are three women from Brazil on the Lady Saints Volleyball team.

Niem Stevenson, who was named an NJCAA All-American, drives to the lane against Hutchinson.  The Saints freshman averaged 19.3 points per game on the year, 1.6 steals and 5.3 rebounds per game.

After one of the best freshmen years in Seward County history, Niem Stevenson took home a NJCAA 3rd team All-American award.

Seward struggled on Friday, April 12, to keep the Trojans off of the bases as they lost their first series to them at 16-5.

Saints struggle in conference

The Seward County Saints go into postseason play this weekend in a do or die situation. They will play a best two out of three series with Neosho on Saturday and Sunday. With two wins, they will advance as one of the top eight teams to the Region VI Championships in Wichita next week, or with two losses, their season will be over.

Lady Saints enter Region VI tourney with winning streak

The Lady Saints softball team has really hit it off this season, winning nine out of 11 games since April 12. Seward will enter the Region VI Tournament with a seven-game winning streak on Saturday in Garden City.

Battle for NJCAA Nationals
