The Seward County men’s tennis team traveled this past week to Wichita for the regional tournament held at Riverside Tennis Park April 16.
The tournament was an experience for the team. They faced some competitive teams that provided them with tough matches, but overall did well.
Christian Romanzini had a good tournament. He won his first match 6-0; second match he lost 6-1. Romanzini lost to the regional tournament champion.
“I had a good match against this player,” Romanzini said. “The only mistake I made was to lose a lot of deuces.”
Romanzini came out victorious against the No. 1 player in the nation by winning his last two sets 6-4 and the third one in a tiebreak 10-6. He placed third in the tournament and scored the most points out of all the Saints competitors.
The rest of the Saints men’s tennis team lost their second match which kept them from advancing into the tournament.
The doubles side went better than the singles side, as Diego Abreu and Caio Rodriguez placed first in their doubles winning by 6-1, and 6-2. Ivan Michelli and Carlos Souza placed third in their doubles.
Romanzini and Fernando Soni were not able to use Romanzini’s momentum from his singles matches after winning their first match, but dropping their second match.
Shawn McWhorter and John Haynes did not participate in the tournament because only six of the team members could participate. Even though they couldn’t play, McWhorter and Haynes showed their support by cheering on the team from the courtside.
The team finished in fourth place for the tournament, ending the men’s tennis season for 2008-2009.
