Janel Tammen is forward for the Seward County Lady Saints. She is a sophmore from Timkin, Kansas, where she attended Otis Bison High School. She led her high school team to the Sub-State Championship game.
The Lady Saints were able to grab second place in the Jayhawk West Conference, falling behind first place Hutchinson. In the last conference home game Wednesday, the Lady Saints defeated Pratt 72-54. The Seward Lady Saints have secured themselves a home advantage for the first round of the Region VI playoffs and will play at the Green House at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The Lady Saints record changed to 22-3 and they took a hard loss as Seward and Hutch, two nationally ranked teams, took the court Saturday. The next conference game is on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The Lady Saints play at the Green House against Garden City at 6 p.m.
Alana Simon is from San Mateo, Calif., where she attended San Mateo High School. In high school, Simon received the honor of Peninsula League Player of the Year as a senior. She is a freshman and a guard for the Lady Saints. Simon is a big part of the Lady Saints team. She averages 11.9 points per game and 3.1 assists per game.
Korina Chapman is a sophomore for the Lady Saints basketball team. She is from Albuquerque, N.M. Before playing at Seward, Korina played at Boston College, where her season was cut short due to a knee injury. While at Boston College, she played a total of 31 games as a freshman.
With the conference record of 4-1 and overall record of 19-2, the Lady Saints are prepared to take on the Cloud County Thunderbirds Wednesday night in the Green House for yet another Jayhawk West Conference double header for the Saints and Lady Saints. The women’s game will tip at 6 p.m. with the men’s game following at 8 p.m.
The Lady Saints faced Cloud County in the Green House Monday night. The Lady Saints defeated Cloud County 54-57, and are 9-3 in the Jayhawk West and 18-7 in the season. The win over Cloud allowed the Lady Saints to be tied with Garden City’s Lady Broncobusters.
The Lady Saints basketball team finished the season 21-11 after Cowley defeated them at the Jayhawk West Conference and Region VI Playoff in Wichita. But honors have come in since then.
Autumn Miller has a bubbly personality and a contagious smile, which makes sense as the current Lady Saints point guard was a cheerleader through junior high.
If anyone has left a mark on Lady Saints basketball in recent history, it’s Rachel Barnes. Barnes was one of only two forwards and one of only 10 picked for the first-team All-American team, and was the only player from the Jayhawk Conference to earn the the accolade.
Barnes put together a highlight reel in one game, hitting threes, scoring inside, forcing turnovers, getting the ball to open teammates, Barnes did it all.
The 2008-2009 Lady Saint basketball team added onto the successful basketball tradition at Seward County putting up an overall record of 28-6 while falling a game short of clinching a national tournament berth.
